Taupo & Turangi
Taupo And Turangi
Taupo lies on New Zealand’s largest lake and smack-bang in the heart of the North Island. It’s a true playground for adventurous souls: numerous mountain bike trails and walks are accessible from Taupo. And with such a big lake right on their doorstep, it’s no wonder there are plenty of opportunities to explore the bays by kayak.
Throw yourself out of a plane or off a bungy platform (you can even plunge into the Waikato River if you dare). Alternatively, choose between a wild whitewater rafting ride on the Tongariro River (Grade 3) or a more child-friendly version (Grade 2).
If you’re more into fishing, Lake Taupo and Tongariro River on the southern end of the lake belong hands-down to the best trout fishing areas in New Zealand. Whether you prefer fishing off the boat or fly-fish from the water, the choice is all yours.
Or maybe you’re just in Taupo for a relaxing weekend getaway!
Being a geothermal area, there are plenty of hot pools (both free and against a fee) to soak and relax after a long day of fun. Equally relaxing is boating into the sunset with a cheeky glass of wine in your hand.
