Waitomo Glowworm Cave and Moa Skeletons

See our New Zealand glowworms as you’ve never seen them before! Start off your day by driving to Spellbound, a little outside of Waitomo. The tours by Spellbound are a hidden gem, they offer smaller groups and are more personable than other Waitomo glowworm tours you may know.

Way below unassuming Waikato farmland lies a massive maze of caves, some of which are packed with New Zealand’s famous glowworms. Without further ado, your guide leads you into the darkness of the glowworm cave where you learn all about these fascinating creatures (spoiler: They look pretty gross in the light). The absolute highlight is the boat ride through the glowworm cave. The light of the glowworms reflect on the still water in the darkness and you can’t help but marvel at this natural wonder as you float through this underground galaxy.

What is unique on this tour is that your guide is more than happy to take pictures of you and the glowworms in the cave, and they know exactly how to do it so both you and the glowworms are visible!

After your visit to the glowworm cave you take a little break with coffee and cookies before moving on into another cave. This one only has a few glowworms but you’ll learn all about the Waitomo cave system, which ones are stalagmites, which ones stalactites and how (slowly) they grow. One of the highlights in this cave is the skeleton of an extinct Moa that, once upon a time, fell through a tomo (a hole in the ground which the area is known for and named after) and couldn’t find its way out anymore.

Ebike rental

Waitomo is not only fascinating underground but above as well. Discover the surrounding natural wonders like Ruakuri Bush Walk (also a good one to come back at night to see some glowworms) and the mix of farmland and fern forests. AJ Circuit is about 25km long and takes up to 4 hours, if you do decide to include the bush walk. The ebike will make riding super easy for almost every fitness level.

Your accommodation is conveniently located in the heart of Waitomo. You’ll stay either at Waitomo Guesthouse, Waitomo Village Chalets or in an Ensuite Cabin at Waitomo Top10 Holiday Park. Because there are only a small number of rooms, I’ll check availability for each place and offer you what is available for your chosen date.
