Escape the masses on the Tongariro Winter Crossing

No matter if you’ve done it before or not, everyone’s heard of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing before. It’s the most popular and probably the most populated day tramp in New Zealand.

And rightly so! The Tongariro Crossing is an amazing volcanic experience from your first step all the way through to the finish line 20 kms down the track.

Now imagine yourself on this stunning day walk, without the masses of people you see in Summer and the mountains sugar-coated with snow. Munch on your packed lunch next to the warm Emerald Lakes, silently steaming in the cold air.

Because there is a good chance the tracks will be covered in ice and snow, you’ll need an experienced guide to ensure you stay safe during the Tongariro Winter Crossing. Depending on weather and conditions, you might even need crampons. But don’t worry. Even if it does sound intimidating, no alpine experience is needed for the Winter crossing. As long as you have reasonable fitness, you’ll be fine.

Please note: This is an adventure activity and as is the nature of adventure, it comes with a certain risk. Before you start the activity, you will be asked to sign a disclaimer that outlines all possible health and safety risks connected to it. You will have to fully read and confirm that you are aware of the possible hazards and that you’re happy to join the activity anyway. This is a new law that came into force in April 2024.
