Cruise to Maori Carvings Taupo

With Lake Taupo being the largest lake in New Zealand, it’s no wonder almost all activities in Taupo are somehow connected to water. 

One of the must-dos while visiting is definitely a cruise to the Maori Carvings Taupo. Towering an impressive 14 meters high is the face of Ngātoroirangi, a powerful Māori high priest. And although the carving looks like it’s been around for centuries, it really was created by a local artist in the 1970s and has since become a Taupo tourist attraction. 

A number of boat companies cruise to the Māori Carving Taupo which is located in Mine Bay and only accessible from the water. The lovely crew from Chris Jolly Outdoors will take you on a 90-minutes cruise, providing full commentary on the history of Lake Taupo and the carving while you get to enjoy the scenery from inside the boat or their viewing deck. 

If you or the young ones are brave enough, try and feed the ducks. Not in the usual way by throwing bread in the water, though. These ducks snap their food right out of your fingers in full flight!

If you don’t feel like cooking, a pub is just around the corner and Taupo’s town centre isn’t too far away. The kids will love the Douglas DC3 aircraft that is part of the local Mc Donalds.
