Dart River Wilderness Jet with Dart River Adventures

Just a few steps from Headwaters Eco Lodge, Dart River Adventures runs its Dart River Wilderness Jet trips straight from Glenorchy village. You’ll board right on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, cross its glassy water, then push on into the Dart River itself: a wide, braided system that fans out across a gravel riverbed at the foot of Mt Aspiring National Park.

These jet boats are built to skim water as shallow as 10cm, cutting fast across the shallows by design, not by accident. The run upriver is unhurried, with plenty of stops for photos and commentary on the area’s history and its significance to local iwi, as the landscape shifts from open farmland into lush native bush. About an hour in, you’ll stop at a river bank surrounded on all sides by water, deep in Mt Aspiring National Park.

The ride back is where it gets fast. Expect close to 100km/h through the braided river, a string of full 360 spins, and a few splashes here and there, courtesy of your boat driver.

Back on dry land, save an hour or two for the Glenorchy Walkway, an easy loop across the wetlands just outside the village. On a calm day the mountains reflect perfectly across the water, a gentle way to wind down before heading back to the lodge for dinner.
