Hollyford Track – A Guided Multi-Day Journey
Tucked away in the heart of Fiordland, the Hollyford Track is one of New Zealand’s most unique multi-day hikes. Unlike many of the country’s famous alpine walks, the Hollyford follows an ancient valley floor from the towering Darran Mountains all the way to the rugged West Coast at Martins Bay. The guided Hollyford Wilderness Experience combines hiking with comfortable lodge stays, gourmet meals included, jet boating and even a scenic helicopter flight. It is a wonderful way to experience one of New Zealand’s most remote and untouched landscapes.
Day 1 – Arrive in Te Anau
Your adventure begins in the picturesque lakeside town of Te Anau. After checking into your hotel, you’ll attend a pre-departure briefing, meet your guides and fellow walkers, and enjoy dinner before an early night ahead of the adventure.
Day 2 – Te Anau to Ka Tuku Lodge – 19.5km walking
The real adventure starts with a scenic drive into the Hollyford Valley. Today’s walk covers approximately 19.5 kilometres through lush native beech forest, past hidden waterfalls and alongside crystal-clear rivers. Along the way, your guides share fascinating stories about the valley’s Māori and European history.
The day ends at Ka Tuku Lodge, at the foot of Mount Madeline and surrounded by native bush. After a hot shower, settle in for a delicious three-course dinner and a relaxing evening in this remote wilderness setting.
Day 3 – Ka Tuku Lodge to Martins Bay – 12km walking
After breakfast, enjoy a short walk to Lake Alabaster before boarding a jet boat for an unforgettable journey down the Hollyford River and across Lake McKerrow. Explore the historic settlement of Jamestown and wander the windswept beaches and sand dunes of Martins Bay.
Tonight, you’ll stay at Waitai Lodge, a cosy retreat tucked between native bush and the water. Wood-fired hot tubs, roaring fires and incredible stargazing make this one of the highlights of the entire journey.
Day 4 – Milford Sound Heli flight and return to Queenstown – 3.5km walking
Your final morning includes a short walk through ancient podocarp forest before boarding a scenic helicopter flight over spectacular Piopiotahi Milford Sound. From there, you’ll return by road to Te Anau or Queenstown, where you’ll spend a night back in civilisation before returning home (or continuing your journey) the next day

Fitness Level Required
The Hollyford Track is considered a moderate hike. The guided experience covers around 31 kilometres of walking over two days, making it achievable for most active people who enjoy walking and spending time outdoors.
You’re not a walker but want to experience the luxurious wilderness nonetheless? Book a getaway to Waitai Lodge!
