Glowworm Kayaking on Lake Okareka

Rotorua is dotted with lakes. Only 15 minutes outside of town is the beautiful Lake Okareka. Fern trees, bush and cliffs line the shore. And within those cliffs, glowworms hide in smaller and bigger caves. 

For your glowworm kayaking tour, you meet with Paddle Board Rotorua at the i-Site. After a short drive, you arrive at the base of the tour where your kayaking equipment’s waiting for you. After a quick brief, you hop on your kayak and off you go.

The tour starts around sunset to give you some time in daylight to get used to paddling. Once it’s dark enough to see the glowworm, your guides will point you to up to 4 different glowworm caves that are only accessible from the water. Take your time to sit back and take in the glowing galaxies around you. 

On a clear night, the magic continues in the sky and on the lake as you slowly make your way back to the base. Above you, stars pop out and you can see the cloudy appearance of the Milky Way while the stars reflect on the calm water.

Secret Spot Rotorua

The not-so-secret-anymore Secret Spot Rotorua is located on the outskirts of the city, next to Whakarewarewa Forest’s mountain bike entrance. Tucked away from the outside world, a peaceful, lush-green sanctuary awaits. 12 cedar hot tubs look into the forest and towards the entrance, you find a licenced cafe with complimentary shinny dips (foot baths) with your drink.

If you feel like a glass of bubbly while sitting in your hot tub, just push the button and one of the friendly staff rocks up to take your order. Enjoy your drinks and snacks while chatting with your party (be it a romantic soak for two or a fun one with the girls), all while gazing into the soothing green of the forest.
