Queenstown to Milford Sound mini road-trip itinerary

Day 1: Queenstown to Milford Sound drive (278km)

Early morning start in Queenstown. Pick up your car directly at Queenstown airport, grab a coffee and off you are towards Milford Sound. 

Your first pit stop is in Te Anau. This is the last place to pick up some road-trip snacks.

Must-stops along Milford Road are Eglington Valley, the Mirror Lakes, Homer Tunnel (possibly your first encounter with the cheeky Kea) and the Chasm, a 20-minutes loop walk through the dense rainforest

Check-in into your room at Milford Sound Lodge and you’ll instantly feel relaxed. Spend the rest of the day exploring the surroundings of the lodge and then head to Pio Pio Restaurant for a delicious 3-course dinner.

Day 2: Milford Sound Cruise

Enjoy a continental breakfast in your room before heading over to the boat jetty where you check in at Southern Discoveries for your 3-hour Milford Sound Discover More Cruise. Discover the magnificent Milford Sound, see the waterfalls and try to spot all of the Sound’s inhabitants. 

The rest of the day is at your leisure. Spend quality time at the lodge or explore one of the many walks in the area before enjoying another 3-course meal at PioPio restaurant

Day 3: Milford Sound Lodge to Queenstown drive

Check-out at Milford Sound Lodge and drive back to Queenstown to drop-off your car at the airport.
