Towering high over the lake with the same name, Mount Tarawera is impressive from afar as well as from up close.
Back in 1886, the eruption of Mount Tarawera volcano wiped out hundreds of people’s lives, sunk the then-famous Pink and White Terraces and completely re-shaped Rotorua’s landscape.

Today, a guide takes you up the mountain on a bumpy slope. You’ll not only learn heaps about the history of Mt Tarawera, but you’ll also learn what significance the mountain has to the local Māori iwi.

The most fun part about the crater walk is without a doubt the scree run. You run, hop and skip (some tumble and roll) from the summit down a steep, sandy slope, right into the heart of one of the craters. 

Once in the crater, the ‘School of Rock’ teaches you about the volcanic rocks, their weight and the sand and the delicate lichen that grows in the area.

And with some luck, you might even see a wallaby!

Secret Spot Rotorua

The not-so-secret-anymore Secret Spot Rotorua is located on the outskirts of the city, next to Whakarewarewa Forest’s mountain bike entrance. Tucked away from the outside world, a peaceful, lush-green sanctuary awaits. 12 cedar hot tubs look into the forest and towards the entrance, you find a licenced cafe with complimentary shinny dips (foot baths) with your drink.

If you feel like a glass of bubbly while sitting in your hot tub, just push the button and one of the friendly staff rocks up to take your order. Enjoy your drinks and snacks while chatting with your party (be it a romantic soak for two or a fun one with the girls), all while gazing into the soothing green of the forest.

If you’ve been before, you’ll know how good the private hot tubs are. But now they’ve added a forest sauna and cold plunges to the mix, and it’s such a good combo!

The sauna (aptly named Hangi Pit) is tucked right into the bush, overlooking a peaceful stream. And if you’re brave enough, you can hop into the cold plunges from Brass Monkey Ice Baths.
