Make your New Zealand winter dreams come true and escape to the Mackenzie region on the South Island! Go heliskiing on the Tasman Glacier (perfect for intermediate skiers!), enjoy the longest ski runs in New Zealand and then top off your getaway with a relaxing soak in the Tekapo Hot Springs. All while staying in a charming chalet, only steps away from the stunningly blue lake!
Ski The Tasman: Heliskiing for intermediate skiers
Then you think of heliskiing, you probably think: “How awesome does it look but that’s something for the more advanced skiers than me”. Think again!
Ski The Tasman is the perfect skiing adventure for intermediate skiers! The guides show you exactly where to ride so that the difficulty equals green or blue runs in the ski areas.
Spend a day exploring New Zealand’s longest glacier and ski through deep-blue ice caves and seracs. Just you, your guide and the small group of people on your tour. Super long runs, no noise, no crowds, and no eternal queuing at the lifts!
During your day on the mountain, your helicopter or ski plane drops you off at 2500m and you get to ski two 8 – 10 kilometres long runs, riding a 1000-meter vertical ski descent. After the first run, you’re picked up by the pilot who brings you back up for your second ride. Freedom pure!
Please note: Ski The Tasman is not suitable for snowboarders as there are a lot of traverses and it’s simply too flat in many places to get decent momentum. But if you are a group of snowboarders who would like to ride the Tasman, let us know and we’ll arrange another tour for you.
Relaxing day at Tekapo Springs and exploring the town
After an action-packed day on the mountain, there’s nothing better than relaxing your sore muscles.
Spend your second day in Tekapo relaxing, only slowly moving between the different pools and the sauna and steam room. Whether or not you hop in the cold plunge pool is up to you but if there’s snow, it’s always heaps of fun to roll around in it after a sauna session.
Before or after the pools we highly recommend you wander around Tekapo for a bit. There are lots of walking tracks starting in town, or you can visit the Church of the Good Shepherd, or go ice skating on the rink.
Your Tekapo Accommodation: Chalet Tekapo
Chalet Tekapo is a hidden gem in the heart of the town and the lovely owners go out of their way to make you feel welcome in their little slice of heaven.
Sit in a secluded spot in the charming garden surrounded by flowers with a great view of stunning Lake Tekapo.
You stay in a lovely studio room with a super king-size bed (can be split into twin beds), ensuite bathroom and fully functional kitchenette with hot plates.
Chalet Tekapo can accommodate up to 8 people in an apartment, which will be great for a relaxing getaway with the girls.
Only a couple of minutes walk from the Church of the Good Shepherd, most Tekapo attractions and restaurants are within walking distance. Leave your car parked up and enjoy that one drink more. You’re on holidays, after all.
