Cruise Doubtful Sound
Did you know Doubtful Sound is three times longer than its famous sibling Milford Sound and much harder to reach? The isolation of Doubtful Sound adds to its mystical charm and ruggedness.
Your adventure begins with a scenic drive from Queenstown through rolling farmland and mountain landscapes on the way to Lake Manapōuri. From there, you board a boat and cruise across the lake’s sparkling waters, dotted with islands and surrounded by native forest. It feels like the trip is already special, but it is just the beginning.
On the far side of the lake, a coach takes you across Wilmot Pass, a remote rainforest road built for the Manapōuri Power Station. As the road climbs higher, you are treated to incredible views of dense forest, mossy gullies and tumbling waterfalls. At the top, the first glimpse of Doubtful Sound is nothing short of magical.
The highlight of the day is the three-hour wilderness Doubtful Sound cruise. Surrounded by towering peaks that rise straight out of the water, you cannot help but feel small in the best possible way. The crew share fascinating stories about the area’s history and wildlife, while you keep an eye out for dolphins, fur seals and even the rare Fiordland crested penguin.
What makes Doubtful Sound so unforgettable is its remoteness. With no direct road access, only a small number of visitors make it here each day. The stillness is remarkable. Often the only sounds you hear are birdsong, the splash of a seal or the rush of waterfalls spilling down the cliffs.
After your cruise, you retrace your journey back across Wilmot Pass and Lake Manapōuri before heading to Queenstown in the evening. It is a long day, around 12 to 13 hours, but every moment is filled with scenery and experiences that are hard to match.
