Dart River Jetboat: Into the Glenorchy Wilderness

Dart River jetboat parked in stunning scenery and snow-capped mountains

A Dart River jetboat trip in the middle of winter turned out to be one of my best days in Queenstown yet. Here’s the full account: the drive from Queenstown to Glenorchy, what the Dart River Wilderness Jet ride is actually like, what to wear in the cold, where to stay in Glenorchy, and the FAQ I wish someone had answered for me before I booked.

I went solo, in the middle of a frosty August. It turns out every jet boat ride I’ve done in New Zealand has landed in winter, purely by accident. Maybe I’m just a sucker for jetboating in single-digit temperatures. Either way, here’s what a day on the Dart River jetboat with Dart River Adventures is really like.

The Drive From Queenstown to Glenorchy

The drive from Queenstown to Glenorchy is one of the most scenic in New Zealand. I don’t think I’ve said “this can’t be real” out loud as often as I did on this road.

You follow the shores of Lake Wakatipu the whole way, with the mountain range on the other side of the water. There are plenty of pull-offs for photos and short walks, so don’t rush it!

One thing to know: all the scenic stops are on the left, lakeside, as you drive from Queenstown to Glenorchy.
Budget at least two hours for the drive out if you want to stop. Coming back, when you’re not stopping, it takes about an hour.

My Dart River Jetboat Experience: Lake Wakatipu into Mt Aspiring National Park

At Dart River Adventures, I checked in and was handed a neck gaiter. Once the group had assembled, we got a proper welcome, then headed outside for our splash jackets and life vests before boarding a bus to the lakefront. Slightly unnecessary, given the lakefront is about a 30-second drive, or a few minutes on foot, but it kept things moving.

We boarded the jet boat and set off across a completely calm Lake Wakatipu, then into the Dart River itself, a braided river system spread across a wide gravel bed.

Much of the river is shallow, which is exactly why jet boats work so well here. They are built in a way they can skim across water as shallow as 10cm/4in if they’re moving fast enough. A few times I heard the pebbles crunching under the hull as we raced over them. That’s by design, not a mistake.

Further into Mt Aspiring National Park, our driver Josh talked us through the history of the area and why it matters so much to local iwi. We did some spins and turns along the way, with regular stops for photos: snow-capped mountains, blue sky, blue water, and the landscape shifting from brownish farmland into lush native bush once we crossed into the park.

About an hour in, we reached the turnaround point and got out onto a river bank surrounded by water on all sides. Kids and adults sifted through the river pebbles looking for rough pounamu. Nobody found any, and even if you did, you’re not allowed to take it.

Getting the boat back into the water wasn’t entirely smooth. Our driver, Josh, had beached us a little too firmly to get off again on engine power alone, and had to push us off by hand. He got us unstuck quickly… not that I would’ve minded staying a bit longer.

The Ride Back: Full Speed Ahead

The ride back was the real thrill! Josh put the pedal to the metal and raced us through the braided river system at close to 100km/h. In winter, I was very glad of my gaiter over my mouth and nose, the wind made it genuinely hard to breathe. In summer, I imagine you’d eat your fair share of bugs without one.

There were more 360 spins, plus a few cheeky “oops, I splashed you” moments from Josh. Getting hit by cold mountain river spray in winter isn’t that different to summer. You’re already in a splash jacket, and the wind dries you off again fast. It’s proper fun, cold or not.

What to Wear Jetboating in Winter

It was somewhere in the single digits on the day I went, so I layered up. This is what I wore:

  • Two layers of merino
  • A fleece jacket with a hood
  • A down winter jacket with a hood
  • Hiking pants, not jeans. Jeans get cold fast, and if they get wet, they stay wet

I also carried a few extras to add or remove as needed:

  • Merino arm warmers
  • Gloves, leather in my case, though windproof softshell works too. The handrails are heated, so don’t worry too much if you don’t have any gloves
  • A fleece neck gaiter
  • Sunglasses. Wear these whatever the season and weather, they cut the wind and stop your eyes watering

Dart River Adventures supplies the rest:

  • A splash jacket, year-round
  • A neck gaiter in the cold season, which is yours to keep
  • A life vest, year-round

Where I Stayed: Headwaters Eco Lodge

I stayed at Headwaters Eco Lodge in Glenorchy, and I’d recommend it without hesitation. It runs its own power and water supply, the food is excellent, the staff are attentive, and there’s a daily morning yoga session included.

It’s also about as convenient as it gets for jet boating. The Dart River Adventures base is a few steps from the lodge, so I just left the car at the hotel and walked over.

What Else to Do That Day: The Glenorchy Walkway

Between jet boating and dinner, I walked the Glenorchy Walkway. It’s an easy loop, about an hour, longer if you stop for photos, which you should. On a calm day, the mountains reflect perfectly across the wetlands.

Final Thoughts

The Dart River jetboat trip is one of those things photos genuinely undersell. The scale of Mt Aspiring National Park, the speed on the way back, the sound of the river under the hull, none of it quite comes through in a picture.

If you’re planning a trip to Glenorchy, our Glenorchy Getaway for Adventure and Downtime pairs it with the kind of accommodation that makes the whole day feel like a proper escape rather than a day trip bolted onto Queenstown. Dart River Jet Boat FAQ

Is Dart River Wilderness Jet worth it?

Absolutely! I’ve done a fair few jet boat rides on both the North and South Island, and Dart River was one of the highlights of my Queenstown – Glenorchy – Te Anau road trip.

How long is the Dart River jet boat ride?

Two hours if you start the tour in Glenorchy. Budget at least four hours if you’re driving or transferring from Queenstown and back.

How do I get to Glenorchy? Will I need a car?

A car gives you the freedom to take your time on the drive, or to stay overnight in Glenorchy (check out our getaway).

If you’re staying in Queenstown without a rental car, Dart River Adventures offers a complimentary transfer from The Station building in Queenstown.

What’s the best time of year to visit Dart River?

Any time. I went in the middle of winter and had a stunningly sunny, calm day.

In winter, there’s a slightly higher chance your tour could be cancelled or shifted by half a day if the minimum number of bookings isn’t reached. Mine went ahead fully booked. In summer, book well ahead, as tours do sell out.

Guide explaining the National park during Dart River jetboat tour in Glenorchy

How scary or thrilling is Dart River Wilderness Jet?

I’d call it medium. The trip into Mt Aspiring National Park is fairly slow, with plenty of stops for photos and commentary from the driver. The ride back is fast, with a good number of 360 spins. But it’s a wide riverbed, not the narrow canyon walls you get on something like the Shotover Jet.

Can I take photos or videos on the tour?

Yes. Unlike some of the bumpier, more thrilling jet boat rides where only an attached GoPro is allowed, the Dart River jetboat is smooth enough that you’re unlikely to drop your phone or camera in the river. The risk isn’t zero though, so hold on tight if you’re filming at full speed. Your driver will also stop plenty of times so you can safely take pictures.
