Did you know stingrays are almost as playful as puppy dogs? That they can ‘hear’ us through our heart rate and that they get a bit of a kick out of giving us frights as it increases our heart rate?

Those are some of the facts you learn during a Reef Ecology Tour with Dive Tatapouri, best known for the unique stingray encounter in Gisborne. The Tatapouri stingrays are wild animals who live on the reef around Tatapouri for about 6 months each year. 

Dressed in waders, your group heads out to the reef towards the end of low tide. The guides call the stingrays by stomping a bamboo cane on the ground, plus they can hear the people’s heart rate. Whether or not the stingrays show up is up to them as they’re wild animals but they usually do (hey, free food).

Say hi to the stingrays as they ‘jump’ up your legs and feed the some fish if you dare. The Tatapouri stingray feeding experience truly is one of a kind!

In the cabin, you find a fully functioning kitchen, including an oven, as well as bathroom with toilet and shower. Your bed faces toward a massive window. Gisborne is known to be one of the first to see the sunrise and you can watch the sun go up right from your bed!
