The Timber Trail is one of New Zealand’s most popular Great Rides cycle trails and is located in the heart of the Pureroa Forest (Ruapehu District). The 85km long trail is relatively easy to ride (mainly Grade 2 trails with some Grade 3) and takes two days. In between, you enjoy hot showers and lay your weary head (and sore bottom) on a soft, comfy bed. Other than riding your bike on the trail, you won’t have to worry about anything as everything is taken care off with this 2-night Timber Trail package. 

Your Timber Trail itinerary could look a lot like this:

Day 1: Arrive at Timber Trail Lodge

You’ll drive to Ongarure, which is the official end point of the Timber Trail, and park your car up for the next two days. The shuttle to Timber Trail Lodge is already waiting for you, your luggage and your bike, if you choose to bring your own. 

After checking into your comfy ensuite double room (other categories are available), you get to enjoy the evening with a home-cooked dinner and chatting with the other guests. If you’ve hired a bike or e-bike from the lodge, you get it fitted to your height so you’re ready for the next day. 

Day 2: Pureroa to Piropiro (Timber Trail Lodge)

After breakfast and equipped with fluids and your picnic lunch, you’ll leave with your shuttle at the arranged time and drive to the start of the Timber Trail in Pureroa. 

Ride through New Zealand bush and over suspension bridges. Stop for rests and short tramping detours and just enjoy being in the bush. 

Back at the lodge, after a hot shower, dinner is waiting for you. Recount the day with your fellow bikers, have a drink or read a book.

Day 3: Ride from Piropiro to Ongarue and drive back home

Pack your overnight luggage and have it ready for transport when you leave the lodge for the second half of the Timber Trail today. You’ll just take your day pack with you for the ride. The rest of your luggage almost magically appears at your car in Ongarue.

Continue riding through the bush and along the historic tramline and the Ongarue Spiral. 

Your shuttle waits for you at Bennet Road, the official end of the Timber Trail, and brings you and all of your luggage back to your car.

Your Timber Trail Accommodation: Timber Trail Lodge

The Timber Trail Lodge opened in 2017 and is an off-grid haven for weary bikers. The staff looks after you with home-style meals and a licensed bar for dinner and buffet breakfast in the morning. 

Relax out on the massive deck, read in front of the fireplace or chat with your fellow guests. There’s no phone reception but if you absolutely need it, they do have WiFi in the lounge.

Your choice of rooms consists of ensuite rooms with your own bathroom in your room and rooms with shared bathrooms. The comfy beds ensure a good night’s sleep in between your riding days.

Your bikes are safe in the storage area and tools are available should you encounter some issues during the day. There are charging stations for your e-bikes and a drying room with storage crates for wet gear.
