Ride the charming Old Coach Road

The Old Coach Road bike trail is one of the Central North Island’s most rewarding and accessible rides, combining rich history with stunning scenery. This 15km trail, part of the Mountains to Sea Cycle Trail, follows a historic route once used to connect two unfinished railway lines in the early 1900s.

Today, it’s a Grade 2 ride, making it suitable for most fitness levels. It’s even more enjoyable on a full-suspension eBike, which smooths out the cobbled sections and eases gentle climbs. The most popular option is to start in Horopito and ride downhill towards Ohakune, allowing you to fully enjoy the flowing trail without too much effort.

Along the way, you’ll cycle through lush native forest and pass through old railway tunnels. About halfway, you cross the iconic Hapuawhenua Viaduct, one of the trail’s standout highlights. The mix of gravel paths, original cobblestones and winding bush tracks keeps the ride varied and engaging throughout.

Allow around 4 hours to complete the trail at a relaxed pace, with plenty of stops for photos and to soak in the history.

Your ebike rental includes a full-suspension ebike, helmet and the shuttle bus to the start of the Old Coach Road.
